SUBSTANCE RESTRICTIONS: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

The EU RoHS Directive (21002/95/EC and amendments) restricts the use of six hazardous substances. Many other substances have been previously restricted in various regions around the world; and many additional substances are expected to be restricted in the next few years.

  • EU Commission is currently considering additional restricted substances for a revision to the RoHS Directive
  • The EU will impose restrictions on SVHC substances (Substances of Very High Concern) under the REACH regulation starting in 2009.
  • Several countries, states have been creating legislation restricting additional substances over the next couple years.
  • Many EEE producers and commercial users have specified substance restrictions in procurement specifications and contracts.
